Sony is pleased to introduce the PXW-FS5, a small size XDCAM Super35mm camcorder with extraordinary
capabilities. This camera is designed for efficient handheld shooting from any position. To reduce fatigue, its modular design, magnesium camera body only weights 1.7lbs. (800g). It SmartGrip is
positioned to improve balance and at the touch of a button it seamlessly rotates enabling the operator to comfortably transition from overhead to ground level shooting.
Another advantage is its fast operation capabilities: The PXW-FS5 is ready to shoot in about five seconds, plus its 7-Stop Variable-ND, Clear Image Zoom, and 2k Center Scan eliminate frequent filter or lens
changes. Menu changes do not require lengthy rebooting and its Direct Menu enables direct access to many commonly, used functions using the on board monitor, or OLED VF and joystick while shooting.
The PXW-FS5 captures fine detail and wide color gamut with low noise and high image fidelity. It shares the same 4K image sensor, wide color processing and dual-pass professional XAVC encoding technology as
the PXW-FS7. As such, it is easier to match, and becomes the ideal companion to more expensive production tools used in multi-camera shoots, or as an A camera on its own right.
The PXW-FS5 is equipped with both a four preset position Filter Selection Knob on the top front of the body. It also has a large diameter assignable exposure control wheel that can be assigned to smoothly
control iris aperture or the Variable ND Filter with a range of seven F stop. The Variable ND function provides smooth exposure control without affecting the depth of field or image quality degradation. Only the exact amount of attenuation can be applied, forgoing use of lighting, gain or iris aperture changes to compensate for excessive attenuation. The filter density assignment of the ND knob is user programmable. There are four positions: clear plus three others select-able in small increments: 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128. As in other Sony cameras its possible to optionally link a White Balance setting to an ND position.
E-Mount, Alpha Lens System Users and experts alike are recognizing Sony as a world-class lens manufacturer. Sony E-Mount lenses are
designed for motion shooting: The Iris aperture can be smoothly adjusted in 1/120th of a stop, they have circular bokeh and zooms are Par-focal, enabling beautiful focus pulls. Furthermore just like Leica still
lenses, E-Mount short flange design provides the optical superiority of a natural lens design without the limitations caused by a retro focal architectures imposed by the mirror box necessary in DSLR cameras.
Another benefit of a natural lens design is smaller size & weight, a bonus for handheld shooting. Sony leads the way providing affordable 35mm servo zoom lenses, plus there are over 56 Sony E-Mount and A-Mount Alpha Mount System lenses that can be used. A-mount lenses are fast and provide phase detection auto focus capability, which can track moving people or objects. As is well understood by now, the E-Mount accepts virtually all 35mm still and Cine lenses with simple mechanical adapters without any image degradation. More than 200 adapters are available from third party manufacturers. E-Mount cameras offer the virtually endless flexibility to choose lenses for dramatic expression.
Advanced Focusing System & Face Detection
Another improvement offered by the PXW-FS5 is a newly developed fast-acting auto focus algorithm that works even in challenging lighting situations. Auto-focus is very helpful to keep a difficult subject in
focus. The PXW-FS5 also offers a 4x & 8x Focus Magnification window, which the user can re-position, for precise manual focus checking and adjustment. Auto Face Detection can detect multiple people in the frame; if more than one person is visible in the frame, the camera will try to split the focus; if not possible, it will judge which one is the main subject and set focus priority on it.
